Knowing the piano is a great assist in knowing any other instrument, but it is not something that you would have to be proficient in. To this day, when I m trying to work out something on the Guitar, I turn to the piano or keyboard to play it just to see how it's supposed to look and sound. AND in the case of a teacher.. let's say you have a good student who wants to play a solo but they need someone to accompany them.. you ned to be able to provide that to them while they are working on the piece.
