Yes, I hear you there. As a piano instructor, keyboard and guitar, I agree that a visual approach in the teaching / learning the keyboard works much better than just reading notes. (Sight Reading is useful, too.) And yes, the theory of music is your best friend, believe it or not! Use it for better viewing position (on keys or guitar or other). And it is very useful in improving and learning and the composition of existing parts and songs. Music theory helps you to see common trends and patterns in music.
