How many years of private piano lesson before I can play on my own?

I play the flute, but I also learned the piano for a year now, as a secondary instrument to help the way I play the flute. How many years of piano lessons I take before I could play and develop my skills on my own piano?
On the average I would say 4 or 5 years. Even then you would have to be very serious about it.
i’d say 6 or more.
i quit piano lessons after 9 years and now i’m developing my skills on my own, which works out very well for me
I think it is different for everyone, but I’m assuming you have a good foundation of music theory already from the flute. I’d say once you are comfortable with reading both clefs including some ledger lines on both and can easily coordinate both hands together with chords and melody playing intermediate level music, you would be able to continue on your own.
However, this takes an extreme amount of dedication on your part to continue developing skills without a teacher to push you along. In my own experience, I took piano lessons from third grade up until college graduation. Although I want to continue improving musically and challenging myself with new songs, I find that I rarely sit down and practice on a regular basis and choose new songs. It is much easier to do when you have a teacher assigning you things and listening to you once a week. It really helps keep you on track and focus. It may be worth the money if you are serious about it to keep the teacher!!
