Gymnopedie / It Never Entered My Mind- lesson -solo jazz piano

This is based on George Shearing’s solo version which combines these 2 songs. It is not, however, an exact transcription . The well known Satie theme is used as a short interlude between the main sections of the Rodgers and Hart standard ‘It Never Entered My Mind’ – and also as an intro. and outro. I find these useful songs to use in teaching pianists new to jazz. It is relatively easy to play, with a repeating 2 bar left hand pattern through much of the arrangement. There are opportunities for a little improvisation over these repeating 2 bars, and in the key of C – making it a good choice for relative beginners in jazz. For high quality video, add ‘&fmt=18′ to the URL above, or better still, there is a much clearer video and audio, and also the leadsheet (both free to download) at www.bushgrafts.com. A full printable transcription, as on the video is on my DVD (details on my site)

‘But Not For Me’ (G. Gershwin) – Solo Jazz piano lesson

‘But Not For Me’ – Solo Jazz piano lesson. For how to really play this try the version by Joe Chindamo (from Melbourne Australia) au.youtube.com By comparison this is rather pale! Nevertheless, with the added text comments, some students of jazz piano might get some ideas. Wouldn’t it be great though, if some of the real greats did this – explain why they played this or that while improvising on a song that we knew well. It may br difficult to read the notation – a much clearer version (in stereo) is at web.newsguy.com If you want to see this or other videos in high quality video to see the notes clearly(and in stereo), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above.
